“I
don’t like this issue of commandments. We should be free to do whatever we like
just like birds in the sky”.
You are trying to promote irresponsibility; obeying God’s law
guarantees prosperity. But I commanded them this thing, saying, Obey My voice, and I will be
your God, and you shall be My people; and walk in all the ways that I have
commanded you, so that it may be well with you Jer
7:23 . The commandments were not brought out to
restrict you but to guide you. Have you not heard the saying the rule of law
guarantees our freedom? Even the scripture call it the law of liberty. Talk and act as
people who are going to be judged by laws that bring freedom Jas 2:12.
“ I don’t see any liberty in it: thou shalt not do this and thou shalt
not do that. Very restrictive words if you ask me”.
Someone once said the “thou shalt nots” leave you free to do a whole
lot more things. What would the world be like without laws? Complete chaos
would take over: even the birds you refer to must obey laws about flight to
remain in the air.
“Well I just know I have this pull towards those
things the commandments say I should not do. Sometimes just knowing that I am
not supposed to do it makes it all the more attractive”.
Your problem is well documented: it proves we are sinners by nature. In fact, I wouldn't
have known sin if it had not been for the law. For I wouldn't have known what
it means to covet if the law had not said, "You must not covet." But
sin seized the opportunity provided by this commandment and produced in me all
kinds of sinful desires Rom 7:7, 8. “I don’t feel comfortable listening to you.
Knowing what to do and not doing it makes me guiltier; and is there not greater
punishment for those who know and do not do?”
Yes, there is. But the laws are written in creation and in the
conscience too. Rom 1:20 Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his
eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived
in the things that God has made. So those people have no excuse at all!
“So what am I supposed to do?”
Call to Jesus- He will save you.
Listen to the noise
on the hilltops! It's the people of Israel, weeping and begging me to answer
their prayers. They forgot about Me and chose the wrong path. I will tell them,
"Come back, and I will cure you of your unfaithfulness." They will
answer, "We will come back, because You are the LORD our God. On hilltops, we worshiped idols and made loud
noises, but it was all for nothing- only You can save us Jer 3:21-23
